Easy Kids Songs to Sight Read on Piano
When it comes to keeping beginning students in piano lessons, most teachers recognize the importance of properly levelled method books, off-the-bench piano games, and motivating repertoire. All of these things combine to create fun lessons and consistent progress.
What doesn't seem that important to student retention is sight reading. In fact, at first consideration, sight reading seems down right counterproductive.
For most of us, sight reading probably brings up traumatic piano exam memories from our childhoods. Or is that just me! But as you've probably guessed, sight reading is way more important than one might think. And, if incorporated into lessons regularly, may just keep your kids in piano lessons for the long haul.
In today's post, we're sharing a sight reading printable for beginning piano students that is both fun and painless.
A Pop Music Sight Reading Pack For Beginners
Today's sight reading printable is designed for beginning teen piano players, but can be used for any students capable of playing chords as fifths with their left hands.
As we've mentioned before, beginning teen piano players are a high risk group for dropping out of piano lessons. Fortunately the reasons they quit can be remedied with pop music sight reading.
Most often, teen beginners quit piano lessons because their music is boring, they are learning too slowly or they feel self conscious about their playing abilities. Can pop sight reading solve these problems? You bet!
When kids learn to sight read from their very first lesson, they never learn to think of it as scary and will be more willing to sight read in lessons and at home. This leads to early beginners who are proficient sight readers. And when this happens, these early beginners learn music faster and are more confident piano players.
So, sight reading will therefore solve the teen issues of learning too slowly and feeling self conscious. But what about the "boring" part? Well, we've solved that too!
In the sight reading printable below we've used pop chords (played as fifths) in the left hand to create a cool-sounding sight reading experience. Before you download the printable read the tips below.
Tips For Pop Music Sight Reading
The effectiveness of our Pop Music Sight Reading hinges on your beginning piano students abilities to recognize and play the "pop chords" C, F, G, and Am (modified to be played as fifths). With a little practice your students will pick up these chords without much difficulty. To begin, ensure your students can recognize and play each pop chord. Next, have them play various progressions on the pop chords.
Once your students are proficient in playing the pop chords, have them sight read the bass staff portion of the Pop Music Sight Reading activity only. When they have mastered the left hand pop chords, have them sight read the activity as intended.
